Liposuction for Men: Quick-Reference Guide to Costs and Looking Ripped

Updated

By Dr. Fan

For many men, the gym is where the action happens when it comes to sculpting the abs, pecs, biceps, and triceps. In recent years, there have been an increasing amount of men turning to plastic surgeons to help them get rid of stubborn pockets of fat - empowering them to look better than ever.

In fact, recent figures from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) revealed that an increasing number of men are seeking aesthetic refinements. In their 2016 preliminary survey findings, ASAPS highlighted that there were more than 1.2 million procedures performed on men — a 325 percent increase since 1997. As for the most frequently performed procedures among gents, Liposuction topped the list.

The upward trend in male liposuction is not exactly a surprise at our practice in San Francisco. We’ve also noticed a surge of gentlemen from all ages showing interest in addressing troublesome areas through liposuction.

Everything You Need to Know About Male Liposuction

Whether it's pesky “man boobs,” or the dreaded beer belly, there is a liposuction treatment plan available for men seeking a sculpted look.

In this article, we’ll address the most common concerns about male liposuction, and how it can help you feel great even with your shirt off!

Common Issues Addressed by Male Liposuction

Despite countless hours spent at the gym, or eating clean, some problem areas just won’t budge. Liposuction can be used to remove fat deposits in the following problem areas:

  • Chest - also known as “man boobs”
  • Abdomen - beer belly, love handles, and spare tires
  • Back, flanks, and sometimes the neck

For those with specific concerns about their man boobs, a male breast reduction treatment plan typically involves liposuction plus a male chest lift. In some cases, liposuction alone is sufficient enough for a flatter and firmer chest.

Besides a more sculpted look, a growing body of scientific findings suggest that lowering body fat can improve overall health, and reducing the risk of diabetes and high cholesterol levels.

Get the Shredded Look with High-Definition Liposuction

At 77 Plastic Surgery, we offer various types of liposuction, ranging from tumescent liposuction to laser-assisted (SmartLipo) to ultrasound-assisted (VASER) to high-definition liposuction.

For most men, the high-definition liposuction technique (also known as abdominal etching) makes the most sense to help them transform their body and look truly ripped.

This specialized type of targeted liposuction aims to enhance the underlying muscular definition of the upper trunk by performing selective superficial liposuction and muscle enhancement with fat grafting.

It is worth noting that not all plastic surgery practices are adept in abdominal etching because it requires specialized training and equipment.

In contrast to other liposuction types, high-definition liposuction requires additional procedure time, recovery time, costs, and surgical expertise. However, many male patients have remarked that high-definition liposuction is definitely worth the additional expenses and longer recovery period.

How Much is Liposuction for Men?

The ballpark price for liposuction in San Francisco is between $10,000 to $50,000. High definition liposuction may cost even more.

Often, pricing is between $8,000-$15,000 for each problem area.

As the liposuction of choice for men, high definition liposuction is about twice as expensive as other liposuction techniques. Also, keep in mind that men have unique needs and different anatomical features than women —i.e., more fibrous tissue which can be tougher to remove

Additional factors that can potentially influence liposuction cost include the following:

  • Your liposuction needs and goals
  • Type and extent of your liposuction
  • Experience and reputation of your plastic surgeon
  • Your choice of anesthesia
  • Your geographical location

Additional Notes on Male Liposuction

It's not uncommon to think that liposuction is a procedure that is solely designed for women. Such a statement is far from the truth. This is just one example of the plastic surgery misinformation out there.

To help you make an informed decision before opting for male liposuction, these additional notes are worth poring over:

Liposuction Will Not Treat Obesity

Liposuction is not an alternative to bariatric surgery in addressing obesity or extreme weight gain. Think of liposuction as a finishing touch that will help improve the way you look after losing a significant amount of weight via surgery or lifestyle changes. Likewise, liposuction is not the go-to procedure to reduce the appearance of loose, excess skin. A tummy tuck will be more fitting if you have this type of concern.

One of our past patients, Mr. M, is a good example. He lost 50 pounds and was struggling with the last few pounds in his midsection. He decided to opt for liposuction and has never been happier with the outcome.

Choice of Surgeon Matters More Than the Machine

Your choice of plastic surgeon is the most important factor to obtain phenomenal outcomes from male liposuction.

In the end, your surgeon’s skill, attention to detail, artistry, and experience is what matters the most. So it makes sense to put a lot of effort when it comes to choosing the right surgeon for your liposuction.

Warning: Beware of the Laser Hype

Be wary of practices promising that laser liposuction can eliminate the need for a tummy tuck. Currently, there is no liposuction type (even SmartLipo) that can help get rid of loose, excess skin.

In addition, laser liposuction is not necessarily "safer" or "better" than other forms of liposuction, despite what other sources claim. There is no solid scientific proof so far to back up these too-good-to-be-true claims. At our practice, we frequently counsel patients who have been disappointed by these technologies and they end up needing a tummy tuck anyway. In some instances, they require even more extensive reconstruction.

Ready To Look Truly Ripped?

While male-centric plastic surgery doesn't make the headlines as often as women's treatments, you can actually rely on liposuction if you feel like it’s high time that you get that sculpted look.
