Tummy Tuck

WATCH & HEAR MORE

A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess fat and skin from the abdomen, as well as tighten the underlying muscles. This results in a flatter and more contoured abdominal area.

Candidacy

If you're bothered by loose or droopy skin around your abdomen, have a bulging tummy, excess weight in the midsection, or stretched abdominal muscles, then a tummy tuck may be the right procedure for you.

To qualify for the procedure, you must be in good overall health, a non-smoker, finished with having children, near your goal weight, and have realistic expectations.

Tummy Tuck Surgery

A tummy tuck procedure begins with you being placed under anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery. Once the anesthesia has taken effect, liposuction will be performed to remove excess fat from your abdominal area. This will enhance the overall results of your tummy tuck by reducing unwanted bulges and creating a more contoured appearance. The liposuction technique uses a thin tube called a cannula that is inserted through small incisions in your skin. The cannula will then be used to suction out the excess fat cells.

Next, Dr. Fan will repair any weakened or separated abdominal muscles. This step is especially important for individuals who have experienced muscle separation due to pregnancy or significant weight loss. Dr. Fan will carefully suture your muscles back together, creating a tighter and more toned abdominal wall.

Once the muscle repair is complete, Dr. Fan will remove any excess skin from your abdominal area. This may involve removing a significant amount of loose or sagging skin, particularly in cases where there has been significant weight loss or multiple pregnancies. The remaining skin will then be re-draped to create a smoother and more aesthetically pleasing appearance.

After the excess skin is removed and the remaining skin is repositioned, Dr. Fan will close the incision using sutures or surgical adhesive. The incision is typically placed in a way that allows for it to be concealed beneath underwear or swimwear. Although scarring is inevitable, the scars from a tummy tuck procedure typically fade over time and can be hidden by clothing.

Following the surgery, you will be closely monitored in a recovery area. Specific instructions on how to care for the incision site, as well as recommendations for activity levels and follow-up appointments, will be provided to you.

Mini Tummy Tuck

A mini tummy tuck is a less invasive procedure that targets specific areas of the lower abdomen. It is a variation of the traditional tummy tuck and is suitable for patients with small amounts of loose lower abdominal skin and good muscle tone.

During a mini tummy tuck, a smaller incision is made along the bikini line. Excess skin is removed through this limited incision, and liposuction may also be used to remove excess fat in the area. The main goal of a mini tummy tuck is to address mild lower abdominal skin and/or muscle laxity, along with excess fat.

It's important to note that not all patients are good candidates for a mini tummy tuck. In fact, most patients are better suited for liposuction alone or a full tummy tuck.

Recovery

During the first week, you may experience soreness and discomfort. It's important to rest and limit activities during this time. While walking is encouraged to promote healthy circulation, expect temporary swelling, bruising, numbness, and tingling. Drainage tubes, if used, will be removed in about 1-2 weeks, and a compression garment should be worn for approximately six weeks.

Strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for about six weeks to ensure proper healing. Recovery time varies depending on individual factors, but most patients start feeling "back to normal" within 3-6 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is the difference between a tummy tuck and liposuction, and how do I know which procedure is better for me?

A tummy tuck and liposuction are both procedures that can improve the appearance of the abdomen, but they address different concerns. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and tightens abdominal muscles, while liposuction focuses on removing unwanted fat. If you have loose skin and stretched abdominal muscles, a tummy tuck may be more suitable. However, if you have good skin elasticity and muscle tone but want to remove stubborn fat deposits, liposuction may be a better option.

2. How does abdominal liposuction differ from a tummy tuck?

Abdominal liposuction and a tummy tuck differ in their scope and purpose. Liposuction solely targets excess fat pockets in the abdomen, while a tummy tuck addresses both excess fat and loose skin, as well as repairs stretched abdominal muscles. Liposuction is a less invasive procedure and is best suited for patients with good skin elasticity and muscle tone. On the other hand, a tummy tuck is a more extensive surgery that is appropriate for individuals with significant loose skin or muscle laxity.

3. Is it safe to perform liposuction along with a tummy tuck?

Yes, it is generally safe to perform liposuction in conjunction with a tummy tuck. In fact, combining liposuction of the abdomen and love handles with a tummy tuck is often recommended for optimal results. However, it is essential to consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon who is experienced in both liposuction and tummy tuck procedures to ensure safe and effective outcomes.

4. What is a mini tummy tuck?

A mini tummy tuck is a variation of abdominoplasty that targets specific areas of the lower abdomen. It is a less invasive procedure compared to a full tummy tuck and involves a shorter incision along the bikini line. A mini tummy tuck is suitable for patients with mild lower abdominal skin and/or muscle laxity along with excess fat. However, it is essential to note that most patients are better candidates for liposuction alone or a full tummy tuck rather than a mini tummy tuck.

5. What is the scar like after a tummy tuck?

The scar from a tummy tuck is usually hidden in the bikini line. The exact placement of the scar depends on factors such as anatomy, the amount of loose skin, belly button location, and tissue relaxation. While the scar may initially be noticeable, it typically fades within months to years. The quality of the scar can be influenced by various factors including age, genetics, skin type, healing properties, and surgical technique.

6. Will my belly button look funny after tummy tuck surgery?

During a tummy tuck, the belly button may be repositioned for better aesthetic results. However, an experienced plastic surgeon will ensure that the belly button retains a natural appearance. The surgeon will carefully plan the incisions and sutures to create a harmonious and aesthetically pleasing belly button while addressing the excess skin and muscle laxity. It is important to discuss your concerns and expectations with Dr. Fan during the consultation to ensure that you achieve the desired results.
